Asia Institute for Political Economy (AIPE) summer academic programme
at HKU, July 30 - August 20, 2004

Dear Student,
The School of Economics and Finance, in conjunction with The Fund
for American Studies (TFAS) and Georgetown University in Washington
D.C., is again offering a 3-week academic programme at the University
of Hong Kong next summer, July 30 - August 20, 2004. The Asia Institute
for Political Economy 2004 aims to attract 60 of Asia and America's
most outstanding university students to study the principles of
free market economics and political concepts such as the rule of
law, separation of powers, and the role of an independent press.
Students will be chosen based on their English proficiency, university
transcript, essay, demonstrated leadership ability, academic awards,
and interest in exploring the ideals of a free-market economy and
democracy. Students who pass the final examination shall be awarded
a Graduation Certificate as well as 3 semester hours of academic
credit from Georgetown University.
In the summer of 2002, in addition to students from our host institution
here at HKU, we successfully recruited for our inaugural programme
altogether 46 students from Peking University, Tsinghua University,
Fudan University, National University of Singapore, National Taiwan
University, Korea University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong
Kong University of Science and Technology, Vanderbilt University
and the University of Texas for a unique exchange of ideas and cultures.
This summer programme shall prove to be a golden opportunity and enriching
experience for the energetic and serious participant. Selected students
will reside together in Starr Hall next to the main campus. Aspiring

Please note that the deadline for local students for AIPE 2004 is
March 15th, 2004.
An information session for this youth leadership programme
shall be held next Friday, November 28th, 2003, from 4:30 - 5:30
p.m. in Room LE 7, Library Extension Building. Color brochures
of the AIPE 2004 as well as the Georgetown 2004 summer institute
shall be distributed to those who attend. Several HKU graduates
from AIPE 2002 and Georgetown 2003 summer institutes, together
with Dr. Timothy D. Hau, Academic Director of AIPE, shall be on
hand to give a brief presentation and answer questions from students.
