  • What are the prerequisites for admission?

    To be eligible, you should:

    1. Possess a good Bachelor's degree from a recognized university;
    2. Have at least 2 years of post-graduation work experience (applicants with strong academic records but no work experience are welcome to apply for full-time programme for which core courses will be held in the daytime at Cyberport, Admiralty Town Centre or Pokfulam campus); and
    3. Obtain a TOEFL score if you are not from an English teaching university.

    Exceptional performance in one dimension may compensate another dimension.  

  • What factors are considered in admission decision?

    We will consider the overall assessment of the degree honors/GPA, working experience and referees' recommendation.   

  • I am not sure if I need to take the TOEFL.

    An applicant who wishes to be admitted on the basis of a qualification from an university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong where the language of teaching or examination is not in English is required to obtain a score of 550 or above (paper-based test), 213 or above (computer-based test) or 79-80 or above (internet-based test) in the TOEFL. Test scores that are more than 2 years old will not be accepted.

    A minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) will also be accepted as an equivalent standard.  

  • What is the HKU code number for TOEFL?

    The HKU code number for TOEFL is 9671.   

  • Do I need to submit my GMAT score?

    Although GMAT is not a compulsory requirement for admission, applicants with good GMAT scores may have an advantage. The HKU MFin code number for GMAT is FS2-WL-65.   

  • When is the application deadline?

    The application deadline for 2010-11 intake is February 25, 2010.   

  • Do I need to attach my undergraduate results with the application form?

    Transcripts and certificate are required, you can:

    submit in person-

    • bring along the original copy when you submit the application form , if applicable, to The University of Hong Kong Master of Finance (HKU MFin) Programme Office; or

    submit by mail-
    • you will be requested to bring along the original copy and photocopying documents to HKU MFin Programme Office for certification purpose; or
    • get your documents duly declared as true copies before a notary public (e.g. A Commissioner for Oaths at a City District Office, HKSAR Government); or
    • make use of 'Transcript Request' form in the application form.

    Above is also applicable to HKU undergraduates.   
  • What is the cost of the programme?

    The proposed tuition fee for the academic year 2009-10 is HK$162,000, subject to final approval of the University. The fee shall be payable in 3 instalments over one year for full-time study or in 6 instalments over two years for part-time study.

    Should students like to take additional courses, each course will cost HK$10,000. Subject to approval of the Programme Director, advanced standing of maximum four courses may be granted and the tuition fees will be adjusted by HK$10,000 per course accordingly. There is also a non-refundable application fee of HK$300.

    Note: The fees are subject to final approval of the University.   

  • Is there any financial aids, scholarships, fellowships or loans for this programme?

    Local students of the MFin Programme in full-time or part-time mode can apply for Non-means Tested Loan Scheme.   
  • When are the classes held?

    Courses are offered on a modular basis to allow students to focus on one area of study at a time. Normally, each module consists of 7 weeks including the examination week. Classes are usually scheduled for either Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays. Full-time core courses will be conducted in the daytime at Cyberport, Admiralty Town Centre or Pokfulam campus. Full-time electives or part-time classes will be held at Admiralty Town Center from 6:45pm to 9:45pm. Examinations are normally on Saturdays.

    Applicants can choose either the full-time or the part-time mode of study. The curriculum shall extend over a minimum of one academic year and a maximum of two academic years for full-time study, or a minimum of two academic years and a maximum of four academic years for part-time study. Full-time students normally need to take four classes each week whereas part-time students normally take two evening classes each week.  

  • Can I apply for exemption and/or advanced standing?

    Exemption on core course may be granted if candidates can produce evidence, such as transcript and course syllabus, that a course is equivalent in content to another course taken elsewhere for which a satisfactory grade has been obtained. No credits will be given for the exempted course and candidates shall be required to take an approved alternative course.

    Advanced standing of up to maximum of four courses may be granted if candidates can provide evidence, such as transcript and course syllabuses, that they have taken equivalent courses at a graduate, postgraduate or master level from a recognized programme elsewhere with a satisfactory grade or possess a relevant professional qualification. In such cases, no replacement courses will be required and the tuition fees will be adjusted accordingly.  

  • Does concurrent registration allow in HKU?

    Students registered to read for a postgraduate curriculum at this University MUST NOT be registered simultaneously to read for another qualification in this University or at another institution, except with the approval of the Board of Faculty of Business and Economics given in advance. A breach of this Regulation in Hong Kong or elsewhere may result in the student concerned being required to discontinue studies at this University.  

  • Can I have an accommodation in the campus?

    Full-time postgraduate students are eligible to apply for accommodation at a monthly rental charge for a single room in Graduate House at HK$2,500 and in St. John's College Post-graduate Residence at HK$3,800.

    In addition, students may also apply for accommodation in one of the University's halls of residence, but it must be emphasised that the majority of places are allocated to undergraduates.

  • Are MFin courses included in the list of reimbursable courses for the purpose of the Continuing Education Fund (CEF)?

    The MFin Programme has been included in the list of reimbursable courses for CEF purpose. The Institution Code for HKU is 001 and the Course Code for “Master of Finance” is 23M02189-1. Please visit the following website for details of CEF:

    Please note, in accordance with the policy of Office of CEF, students in the MFin Programme would be eligible for fee reimbursement only upon their successful completion of the entire programme. They are not eligible for reimbursement upon completion of any individual courses.

    For those who completed the individual course(s) which started before April 1, 2007, they are eligible for fee reimbursement upon completion of individual courses.   

  • What is the payment schedule for the programme tuition fee?

    The programme fee is payable in 3 instalments over one year for full-time students or in 6 instalments over two years for part-time students, irrespective of the number of courses took in the particular year. Payment schedule is as follows:
