Economics and Finance Society (EFS)

Economics and Finance Society BEA HKUSU (EFS) is one of the oldest student societies in HKU, with over 60 years of experience. Being the departmental society of the School of Economics and Finance, EFS aims at enhancing students' interest in economics and finance and acts as a bridge between the School and students. EFS offers its members an intellectually stimulating environment, exciting activities and organised events, all of which aiming to promote economics and finance education and learning. Among the major activities of EFS are the long-standing Annual Budget Talk which is an open forum on the Hong Kong government budget and economy with thousands of participants, international study tours and financial investment competitions.

Economics and Finance Society, BEA, HKUSU Economics and Finance Society (EFS), established in 1940, is one of the largest non-profit-making student-run organizations in The University of Hong Kong. Being the departmental society of the School of Economics and Finance, EFS aims at enhancing students' interest in economics and finance and acts as a bridge between the School and students.

Over the past seven decades, the Society has organized a wide variety of projects and functions for its members, as well as the general public. It will continue its mission in promoting the studies of economics and finance among students, and to develop business leaders for the future economic development of Hong Kong.

Activities organised by EFS

  • Budget Talk 2007 Searching Through: Common Ground for You and Me
    Budget Talk is the unique and prominent symbol of EFS. It has been held annually for 38 consecutive years, which allows guests speakers and audiences to express their opinions on the Annual Budget released by our Financial Secretary.

    With the unfailing popularity, a considerable number of firm representatives, professors, university and secondary school students, and the general public were drawn to the event. Six prestigious guest speakers were invited, namely Prof. W.C. Suen, Mr. K.C. Kwok, BBS, JP, Mr. S.O. Tang, Mr. W.C. Shih, JP, Ms. W.H. Lau, JP, Mr. K.C. Shek. We were honoured to have these prominent and prestigious figures interact with the audiences and share their valuable insights towards the Annual Budget.
  • Summer Exchange Programme 2007 Shanghai: The Art of Rivalry
    To broaden students' horizons, Summer Exchange Programme provided different learning opportunities outside Hong Kong. This year, Shanghai, Suzhou and Zhujiajiao were the points of destination. Students explored the differences in operation among firms in the banking, financial and accounting fields, hence, became more familiar with career paths in China. Moreover, they learnt about the administrative environment of municipal government in Shanghai, and experienced the cultural difference between Shanghai and Hong Kong.
  • Academic Project 2007 Arena AIA Insurance Planning Awards
    Academic Project aims at encouraging students to put their economics and finance knowledge into practice through their involvement in workshops, seminars, firm visits and competitions. Cooperating with AIA, a world-leading insurance company, Academic Project this year provides students with a golden opportunity to be exposed to the rising insurance industry, and to show their creativity and talents in the proposal writing competition.
